The Cold Lake winter Team Cattle Penning and Ranch Sorting series unofficially starts the end of October and officially starts in November after the Alberta Annual Classic in Edmonton. They are held twice a week, usually Tuesday and Friday nights. One night will be Team Cattle Penning and the other Ranch Sorting. Be there by 6:00 in the evening to give the announcer a chance to get the teams set up. Everyone is expected to help and do their part and it is all volunteer. The cost varies whether you are a member of the ag society or not, but is very afforadable and fun. When the temps. dip below -20 all events will be cancelled.
Each night when you arrive your name is place in a bucket for the number of times you want to ride. Say you want to ride three times, your name is drawn three times and put with two other people. Then there is three go rounds. Points are awarded to individuals and tallied at the end of the season. The points are as follows, 3 for first, 2 for second 1 for third and 1 for participating. At the end of the season we usually have a banquet and prizes.
So even if you have never penned or sorted before come on out and join us. It is a place to learn and gain experience. Everyone is happy to help and answer any questions you may have. You will not be tossed in a snow bank if you don’t pen your cow.
